IPL Winners List : History of IPL Winners & Runners up from 2008 to 2021
The fourteenth edition of the Indian Premier League is about to start in a few days. The tournament will take place between 9 April and 30 May. Fans are very excited to know which team will become the champions this time.
The tournament started back in 2008 with Rajasthan Royals lifting the maiden IPL title. Mumbai Indians are the team with the highest number of wins in the IPL Finals. MI has grabbed a mountainous five titles to their name making them the most successful team in the history of IPL. The Chennai Super Kings have the second spot with three titles to their name. There are still teams who have not won a single title yet in the previous thirteen seasons.

IPL 1st Season Winner (2008): Rajasthan Royals
The finals match took place between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings. The former won the tournament after defeating CSK from three wickets. The Award for Man of the Match was given to Yusuf Pathan since he took three important wickets along with scoring good runs.
On the other hand, the player of the tournament was Shane Watson. Purple Cap was awarded to Sohail Tanvir since he took the most wickets through his bowling streak, whereas the orange cap award was given to Shaun Marsh, who scored the highest runs in the entire tournament. The award for the fair play was given to the runner up team – Chennai Super Kings.
IPL 2nd Season Winner (2009): Deccan Chargers
Deccan Chargers made it to the finals of season 2 of the IPL along with Royal Challengers Bangalore. RCB won the toss and decided to go for fielding. The Deccan Chargers posed a challenge of 143 runs in 20 overs. RCB was able to garner 137 runs till the end of the overs; thus, making the former team- Deccan Chargers lift the 2nd IPL trophy. However, the Man of the Match was given to Anil Kumble from RCB for performing the best.
It has been the only season when the team standing in fourth place on the league table lifted the trophy, and none of the top 2 performing teams on the league table made it to the Finals.
IPL 3rd Season Winner (2010): Chennai Super Kings
This season literally saw the Clash of the two greatest players in the history of Cricket. Ms Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings battled against Mumbai Indians led by the god of cricket Sachin Tendulkar. CSK won the toss and decided to go for batting. The team garnered a total of 168 runs by the end of the twenty overs. Their opponent Mumbai Indians settled for just 146 runs.
CSK won the title of the 3rd season of IPL by 22 runs. The award for the man of the match was given to Suresh Raina for making a half-century and taking a wicket. Nevertheless, Sachin Tendulkar settled for the award of Player of the Tournament for his immense contribution throughout the matches.
IPL 4th Season Winner (2011): Chennai Super Kings
The Chennai Super Kings made the record of being the first team to win consecutive titles in the Indian Premier League. This time, fans saw the defending champions CSK playing against the Royal Challengers Bangalore for the prestigious title. CSK once again won the toss and decided to do batting first. They made 205 runs and won the tournament by a whopping 58 Runs.
Murali Vijay won the title of the Man of the Match. However, Chris Gayle grabbed the title of the man of the series for showing great performance both through his bat and the ball.
IPL 5th Season Winner (2012): Kolkata Knight Riders
The fifth season had the defending champions Chennai Super Kings playing against the Kolkata Knight Riders. CSK won the toss one more time and decided to do batting first. They posed a total of 190 runs as a challenge in front of KKR. Kolkata Knight Riders chased the runs and grabbed the title of the IPL for the first time in 2012.
The award for the Man of the Match was given to Manvinder Bisla for working as a run machine for the team. Sunil Narine won the Man of the Series award this season.
IPL 6th Season Winner (2013): Mumbai Indians
The sixth season of the Indian Premier League witnessed Chennai Super Kings making it yet again to the Final match. CSK played a match against Mumbai Indians who won their maiden IPL title in 2013. MI led by Rohit Sharma defeated Dhoni-led CSK by 23 runs.
The Man of the Match award was conferred to Kieron Pollard for his 60 runs from just 32 balls. Shane Watson received the title of the Person of the Series.
IPL 7th Season Winner (2014): Kolkata Knight Riders
Kolkata Knight Riders played against Kings XI Punjab in the final match of the Indian Premier League in 2014. KKR became the second team after CSK to lift the IPL trophy twice. The former won the toss and decided to field. They chased the total of 199 runs set up by the contending team Kings XI Punjab.
The Man of the Match award was rightly given to Manish Pandey who garnered a total of 94 runs from his bat on just 50 balls. Glenn Maxwell acquired the title of the most valuable player of the season.
IPL 8th Season Winner (2015): Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians lifted the IPL trophy for the second time in the year 2015. They played against CSK in the finals for the third time after 2010 and 2013. The secret behind the success of the Mumbai team was the perfect blend of both the batting and bowling department.
Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai Indians got the award of Man of the Match after hitting a half-century. Andre Russell secured the title of the Person of the Tournament.
IPL 9th Season Winner (2016): Sunrisers Hyderabad
The finals of the 2016 edition of the Indian Premier League witnessed the Sunrisers Hyderabad team grabbing their maiden victory in the IPL tournament against the Royal Challengers Bangalore team. David Warner led the team snatched the trophy from RCB by mere 8 runs.
The Man of the Match award was bestowed to Ben Cutting of SRH. Virat Kohli earned the title of the most valuable player of the tournament after scoring 4 centuries and 7 half-centuries in the entire tournament.
IPL 10th Season Winner (2017): Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians made history after winning the IPL title for the third time after 2013 and 2015 becoming the first team to achieve this feat. The tenth season saw Mumbai Indians fighting the Rising Pune Supergiants in the final match at Hyderabad. The former team won the toss, and Rohit Sharma decided to go for batting.
MI defeated Team Pune by a mere run! The award for the Man of the Match was presented to Krunal Pandya. Ben Stokes was given the award for being the Player of the Series.
IPL 11th Season Winner (2018): Chennai Super Kings
Chennai Super Kings had a match with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the finals of the 2018 edition of IPL. CSK won the IPL title for the third time becoming the second one to achieve this feat after Mumbai Indians. CSK defeated SRH by eight wickets in the finals.
The title of the Man of the Match was conferred to Shane Watson of CSK for scoring more than a century in half the balls. Sunil Narine got the award for the Person of the Series for his contribution to the tournament.
IPL 12th Season Winner (2019): Mumbai Indians
The 12th season of the IPL was imbibed in the books of the history of the tournament in golden letters. This season witnessed the Mumbai Indians winning the title for the fourth time making it the most successful team ever in the history of the series.
MI won the toss and the captain decided to do batting first. The Mumbai team attained 149 runs and the opponent team CSK lost by just a single run. Jasprit Bumrah was awarded the title of the player of the match for his exceptional bowling skills. On the other hand, Andre Russell got the title of the Player of the Series.
IPL 13th Season Winner (2020): Mumbai Indians
The much talked about season of the IPL history saw Mumbai Indians seizing the fifth title of the IPL making them the undisputable champions in the series. Dubai hosted the finals between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. The latter won the toss and decided to do batting first.
MI won the match by 5 Wickets. Trent Boult grabbed the award for being the Man of the Match, and Jofra Archer became the Player of the tournament.
